New Paintings

Forcing myself to abandon ideas of slow and laboured works with lots of detail done over endless sittings. Life is too short, I don't have the time, and I need to paint. So, my goal is to get the image on canvas quickly and without fuss, and learn to say "That will do." I'll post the results here as they arrive.
"Way back home"

Acrylic on canvas board
14" x 18"

Istarted a painting but quickly realised I didn't like where it wasgoing, and didn't feel like following it through to completion. Part ofme has learned to no longer be emotionally attached to ideas, and todiscard things when they just take up valuable time. The followingnight I decided that I would paint over the top of it, but still allowthe initial painting to show through. All the red and darker blue areasand white swirls are the original work, and the brighter blue eveningsky straddling the builings and bright lights are the new painting. Nota great work, but when you squint your eyes you get a sense of beingthere on a wet night driving home. Was a good exercise for me to forcemyself to simplify my brush work and detail.
"Approaching Storm at Rye Backbeach"

Acrylic on canvas
24" x 18"

A new painting from last night. I told myself "Don't get bogged down in the detail, just slap on the paint and move on!" I was reasonably successful I guess, whipping this one up in about 2 hours. From a photo taken at Rye backbeach acouple of months ago. Watched the approaching storm for about an hourbefore the winds got a bit crazy. Stunning place to watch it arrivethough, with an unbroken vista that sweeps across your entire field ofview. I hope to do a few more paintings of the visit there.
Approaching Storm at Rye Backbeach II

Forlast nights painting exercise I stuck with the Rye backbeach photos Itook, this time looking back at the beach while heading to the car forshelter from the approaching wind and rain. I worked in a little moredetail this time, but I still left large areas untouched and kept thecolour palette fairly restricted. Took around 2.5 hours to do. Probably would have benefitted from a slightly expanded palette and a bit more vagueness in the detail. Oh well, next time.
